on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 Several leagues have asked about the organisation of an annual tournament for members of the UK League Snooker Community. If such a tournament was organised would league players be interested in travelling to a venue annually? Please share any ideas you have using the forum |

on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 Hi this is glyn from the kidderminster league i am sure we could get a team or more to join in an annual tournament . how about working an h'cap on a players highest breaks on our registered site, as long as they have played 5 games or more. Let's here from some more league's. I think it is a great idea and if there is only me and you Andy we will bring a team down to play you? |

on Wednesday, October 19, 2005 Hi this is Iain from the bootle league we could get a couple of teams together why as to venue why not play it as a round robin event were each county had a venue. We could arrange for qualified EASB Referees to be there. what do you think? The only problem i could see is that between january and may the calander for matches to be played on weekends is very full as merseyside have difficulty fitting in competitions that they run during this period. |

on Thursday, September 3, 2009 The first UK League Snooker Championship will take place over the weekend of 28th/29th November 2009. The tournament will take place at Rileys Snooker Club, Kirkmanshulme Lane, Gorton, Belle Vue, Manchester, M18 7BA (click here for map). There are twenty two snooker tables, free parking and there is a Diamond Lodge Hotel 200 metres away. The tournament will start at 3pm on Saturday 28th November to allow leagues from all over the country to arrive in time. Each league is invited to enter one team of five players. Depending on numbers of entries we will probably have two divisions and play a league format, with a final between the two winners of each division. The cost of entry is £50 per team. There will be cash prizes for the winners and runners up, along with a cash prize for the player with most wins and highest break. Can anyone help out and provide a laptop, which has internet connection capability? Also a projector would be very useful, so we can project the results, fixtures etc from the website onto a wall. Any help appreciated! If you would like to enter a team, please let me know and when you know the players, please send me their names. Click here to see the tournament, there is also a link from the home page. |

on Thursday, September 3, 2009 Hi, Steve Williams, Match Secretary for the Leamington & District league here. I think this is an excellent idea, and our league will be entering a team. I've been trying to arrange firendly matches against other elagues for some time, but the logistics etc have always got in the way, so a proper organised tournament is just what's required. Now I have to pick the 5 best players :o) I assume we can only name 5 players? What if someone pulls out? Are we able to draft in reserves? I think having a round robin league format is a good idea also, as it means that teams won;t travel all the way to manchester to play one match, get beat and that's it. At leats with a few matches to play all teams will feel involved in the tournament. |
|
Richard Ormiston (Stafford & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Thursday, September 3, 2009 Yes, reserves are no problem. You can bring more than 5 players , but obviously, only 5 will play in each match |

on Thursday, September 3, 2009 Excellent. I'll start assembling my team. |

on Thursday, September 3, 2009 Obviously the Manchester Snooker League will be entering (not much travelling) but is the competition open to any league or do they have to use the leaguesnooker website. Can I suggest it be open to them so I can get promote it to other leagues in the Manchester area. |

on Monday, September 28, 2009 We have only 6 entries so far, I am surprised at the lack of interest in this competition. I believe its the first time that league's from all over the country have had the opportunity to compete against each other. I really want to get this tournament off the ground. If we can't get the numbers, I believe it may never happen. So I am asking those leagues that have declined, or not responded to reach out to their players and ask if they would take part in what would surely be a great competition. There are great players out there, the level of play will be something special to see. |
|
Steve W (Leamington & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 I'll add my bit to this. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for all leagues to compete against each other, and for leagues to get together and discuss things etc. It could be the start of something big. Snooke rin this country needs this kind of thing to keep the amateur game going. It's a brilliant idea, and I am very surprised at the lack of entries. To bulk up entries, maybe some leagues could be permitted a "B" team. I know I could easily get two or three teams to enter there's that much interest in this. |
|
Rob Spencer (Manchester Snooker League) | Posted
on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 I think steves right leagues should be able to enter B teams and C if they wish, why not if it increases the entries and the prize money. |
|
Richard Ormiston (Stafford & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 I agree, the more teams the merrier, I believe Bangor will put in a team as well |

on Thursday, October 1, 2009 To make the competition more solid, I am asking that leagues send a cheque for the entry of the competition. It is £50 a team, once you know the number of teams, please send it to the address on the payment page (once you are logged in) or email richard@leaguesnooker.co.uk for details. I am also adding a closing date for entry by the 21st November. |

on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 We are entering a team, but we're trying to get around the logistics of it. If this is to be played over two days, we may have a problem as staying over will not be cheap. Players may not be so interested if they are having to fork out for accomodation over night, or having to travel home and then back the next day. What are other teams doing? |
|
Richard Ormiston (Stafford & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Thursday, October 22, 2009 There are cheap rooms currently available at the Diamond Lodge: Family Room (Quad) £59.95 Family Room (Triple) £49.95 |

on Monday, October 26, 2009 I received the below email a while back from Mike Greenfield. I believe that the vast majority of leagues who enter this competition play the miss rule in there league matches (let me know if I'm wrong). So to not play the miss rule would be strange for the players. I would like to see referee's of matches to not be very strict with the rule, as I want the event to be a friendly affair. Hi Richard, Just a quick question regarding the Championship in November. Are you going to be using any referees? I myself would be happy to assist, and I'm sure a few of the other local refs would be interested. Or perhaps see if each league or area could provide one. Not sure how many matches you'll be running simultaneously, but roving refs for at least some of it may be a good idea, and then proper referreeing for the quarters, semis and final perhaps. Let me know. Regards, Mike |
|
Steve W (Leamington & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Monday, October 26, 2009 We do not play the miss rule in our league matches. We are a small league of just two divisions. With there being a wide range of abilities applying the miss rule in league matches would be unfair as what may seem like a glaring case of a "foul and miss" by one player, may well be a genuine attempt to hit the ball, but due to ability it can seem like a deliberate miss. Personally I don't feel the miss rule has any place in league matches at an amateur level. In competitions, particularly at the latter stages I feel it does have a place. |
|
Rob Spencer (Manchester Snooker League) | Posted
on Monday, October 26, 2009 Steve We play a cut down version of the miss rule to the effect if a player can see the centre of the ball on he can lose the frame after 3 misses also if a player can hit any part of the ball on it can be called a miss, however if a player is snookered we do not play the miss I think without a qualified ref it can cause too many problems. |
|
Steve W (Leamington & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Monday, October 26, 2009 Hi Rob, I think you're interpretation of the rule is spot on as it only punishes a player when a ball can clearly be seen but they still miss it. It is still asking a non-qualified referee to know he has to observe the table before every shot in the event they will have to replace balls, which I feel is another reason the rule should not be applied at this level. It's not just the ability of the players that need to be considered, but also the quality of the referees (99.9% of the time being players from the home side) |
|
Richard Ormiston (Stafford & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Monday, October 26, 2009 I also like the way Rob's league plays the rule. It will certainly avoid any disputes, so lets go with this and keep it simple. "If a player can see the centre of the ball on he can lose the frame after 3 misses. If a player can hit any part of the ball on it can be called a miss, however if a player is snookered we will not play the miss." |
|
Steve W (Leamington & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Monday, October 26, 2009 I'd agree with that |

on Monday, October 26, 2009 We seem to have got onto the "Miss Rule" here. Rather than write my views out again here, I have used the MISS RULE thread. |

Richard Ormiston (Stafford & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Monday, November 2, 2009 To reconfirm the miss rule we will play: "If a player can see the centre of the ball on he can lose the frame after 3 misses. If a player can hit any part of the ball on it can be called a miss, however if a player is snookered we will not play the miss." The tournament will now start at 2pm on the Saturday, and will recommence at 10am on the Sunday morning. Can I remind the leagues that have submitted a team that payment is due. |

on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 I have a few questions, and maybe a suggestion for future years. Questions 1. Will all the round robin matches be played on the Saturday? 2. If so, what time is it expected to finish on the Saturday? The reason I ask these questions is that I'm trying to determine whether our team will need to stay over or not. Obviously, if we do well and get to the latter stages we'll have to stay over or have a long journey home and back the next day. People may not be keen on forking out to stay over the night. Our league is not very well off and cannot afford to subsidise the players staying over. The logistics of doing this all in one weekend is tough for our league because it's such a long way to come. This brings me on to my suggestion for next year's tournament. I think this could be broken into rounds of matches. With the first group of matches played at a particular venue one month, then the next month, the next round of matches could be played maybe at a different venue, and so on throughout the year, with the knockout stages then held all on one day at the end of the season. I think you'll get what I am suggesting. |

on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Hi Steve, as we will have around 16 teams, we cannot play all the round robin matches on Saturday, they will be continued on the Sunday. I believe that the price of the rooms available at the Diamond Lodge: Family Room (Quad) £59.95 is a great price, at only £15 per person. If you guys get to the final, your expenses will be paid :-) I think the cost will be great value, its not everyday that you will have the opportunity to compete against some of the best amateurs from around the country, so please encourage your team to support this unique event. |

on Saturday, November 21, 2009 The fixtures will be added next week. We are still waiting to see if the Stafford Snooker League will enter a team. We will have two divisions in which there will be 3 fixtures on the Saturday and 4 fixtures on the Sunday (this means each team will play another team twice). Plus the final. Unfortunately Mike Greenfield, referee cannot make the event due to work committments. Onlookers will be able to follow the weekends action, as we will be running the tournament via the website. All results, stats etc will be projected at the snooker club, while anyone can go to the website and see the results as they are entered throughout the days. Good luck everyone! |

on Monday, November 23, 2009 I see there are 14 teams altogether entered. We have 4 games on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. One thing to note, the Diamond Lodge Hotel have a check-in time of 2pm or later, making it a little awkward for checking in. So anyone staying there will have to arrange a late check-in. |

on Monday, November 23, 2009 Steve I'm going over to Rileys to make sure all is in place for Saturday I will call in at the Diamond Lodge and see if you can check in a bit earlier. Remember the club will be open so you can get here earlier and have a coffee anyway before checking in. |

on Monday, November 23, 2009 Thanks Rob. We plan to get there early, hoping to maybe get used to the atmosphere and maybe have a knock beforehand. If check-in time could be midday it would be far easier. We could then get there, get checked in then get a spot of lunch and some practice before the "festivities". :) |

on Monday, November 23, 2009 Steve, Yes the hotel is the red brick building on the right, I spoke with the manager and the answer to booking in early was, they cannot guarantee a room before 2pm however if you do arrive early and the rooms are ready you can check in. The club will be open from 11am and I will be there to get the red carpet ready for Richards arrival later! Seriously though as the Manchester Snooker league is in effect your host I have made sure that one of our comittee is available in case any of the visiting players need any local assistance, taxi numbers, snooker supplies, restaurant recommendations etc. |

We will have a semi-final between the second position team in Division A v first position in Division B and vice versa, then a final between the two winning teams. on Thursday, November 26, 2009 5 frames. I think it's a point per frame, plus a bonus point for the win. Is that correct Richard? |
|
Steve W (Leamington & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Thursday, November 26, 2009 The club won't want all their tables taken up with the tournament, as they would lose a lot of money over the weekend, but having said that, we don't want people on adjacent tables to the match tables do we? There are quite a few matches to play as well. I assume it'll be 1 table per match, as 6 sets of match balls have been asked for. 1 table would make sense. 5 frames can be done in an hour or so. A break can then take place and then the next round of matches. Be good to have time to "mingle" with players from other leagues. |
|
Richard Ormiston (Stafford & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Thursday, November 26, 2009 We will have 14 tables. 2 tables for each match (With a 3rd if needed). We will run 6 matches at a time. I will see how long the matches take on Saturday, and then decide if we have time for another fixture for each team on the Sunday. |
|
Richard Ormiston (Stafford & District Snooker League) | Posted
on Friday, November 27, 2009 The league with the most players went into Division A, the 2nd most in Division B, the 3rd most into Division A, the 4th most in Division B and so on. For the Division B teams that play each other twice, the leagues of similar size were placed against each other. |

It was nice to see such enthusiasm from everyone and every match I watched was played in a friendly and sporting manner. Richard did a sterling job over the two days and I am sure we have laid the foundation for next year when I am sure there will be even more teams and I am sure more sponsorship as I`m sure Rileys did well out of it. Finally congratulations to West Midlands for winning (look after the cup!) and a well done to the local lads from the Manchester District who just missed out. Thanks to all. Rob Spencer |

on Monday, November 30, 2009 On behalf of the Leamington league we'd like to congratulate West Midlands on their win. We'd also like to thank everyone who took part for making it a very successful weekend. We didn't, and couldn't bring our best side by a long shout, but we did our best and thouroughly enjoyed the experience. The matches we played were played in a friendly and sporting manner. We met a lot of good lads. The amateur league snooker system has needed a tournament like this for a long long time and very well done to Richard for organising and pulling off the event. I'm sure it will be even more successful next year with more teams. I know we'll be sending at least 2 teams next year. Also big thanks to Rob and Rileys for all their help and hard work throughout the weekend, loved the curly fries ;) lol Well done everyone, best of luck back in your respective leagues, and see you all next year. |

on Monday, November 30, 2009 I have another suggestion for next year. Start earlier on the Saturday and have matches Best of 10 (2 frames per player). Would be handy if all tables were designated to the tournament. Not criticism at all as the weekend was great, but just looking at ways to make it even better. As for mobiles, that idiot during the Garston match was so rude. I was playing on the adjacent table at the time as well and couldn't believe he just stood there ignoring everyone asking him to turn it off. We had another incident like that on the Wednesday with two lads who weren't involved in the tournament playing around with their ringtones and giggling. |

on Monday, November 30, 2009 Hi Guys, Thanks for the great comments. I'm completely exhausted after this weekend, was a bit much for me, especially with all the traveling in such a short space of time. Next time we will have a dedicated person to enter the results into the database, I have team names still flying around my head, and I will come across for more than 2 days. I had to get up this morning at 3.30am to fly back to Prague so feeling knackered. But apart from that, I believe it was a successful weekend enjoyed by all, thus we will continue with the event next year. I would like to thank everyone for coming from all over the country and I would like to pay special thanks to Rob Spencer, without him the event would not have occurred. Congratulations to West Midlands, although I expected they would walk away with the competition, which they did not. But I believe their performance suffered on the 2nd day because they returned home at 4am on the Sunday morning after a few ales in Manchester :-) |

on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 On behalf of West Midlands Snooker, I thank Richard (assisted by Rob) for their superb administration of the event. Hosts - Rileys, also provided excellent facilities to accomodate everyone. I thank all players and supporters who contributed to make the inaugural event such a success. I am sure that other leagues will take note and enter next year. West Midlands were fortunate to emerge as winners when we managed to raise our game at crucial moments. However the margins are fine and the likes of Ormskirk, Cleveland and Manchester & District proved what quality teams they are. I wish you all - good luck, seasons greetings and hopefully see you next year. |
